The joyful island.

Last friday, my parents and I took a trip up to a true Michigan gem, Mackinac Island. Located between the lower and upper peninsulas, Mackinac is a place worth travelling to. Even if it’s just for a day trip where you spend as much time in the car as you do actually on the island. This day, we went to watch my brother receive his Eagle Scout honor.

On our way, we dropped my sister, Layne, off at the Lansing airport. After her famous last words to my mother, “Don’t worry!”, she took off for three weeks in Kenya where she is establishing a soap business to benefit the community there. You can read more about the business here, and she will also be updating the blog during her time in Kenya.

The highlights of this day included: encouraging conversation with my parents over breakfast, listening to The National on repeat during the long car rides, visiting adorable shops on the island, drinking beer with my dad at dinner while overlooking the lake, and beaming with pride while Chase received his Eagle Scout honor. It’s days like these that I’ll remember years from now, and for that, I am thankful.

To prepare for a day spent outdoors, I chose to layer with my new cardigan from Anthropologie. When I realized that there were only a few sizes left in this I snatched it up! I knew it would be one of those pieces that if it sold out, I would regret not buying it. The watercolor flowers stood out to me the minute I saw it, and because I love it so much I know it’ll be an item that I’ll have in my closet for years. I also decided to layer a couple of my favorite necklaces from Saressa Designs and Lisa Leonard. I used to wear multiple necklaces regularly and slowly got out of the habit, but lately I’ve been loving it again. Considering I was planning on doing quite a bit of walking, I took a risk and wore these brand new flats from Blowfish, and fortunately they were perfectly comfortable all day. See below for detailed outfit information!

Effortless + ShoeDazzle Giveaway

I have worn this exact outfit over and over again. This maxi skirt from Jigsaw London is one of my all time favorite pieces and it instantly dresses up a simple tee. Add a cute pair of flats (I’ve been wearing this pair from ShoeDazzle practically every day) and some accessories, and you are good to go! Put together, comfortable, effortless. Just my style.

Mae took these pictures of me a couple weeks back, and now I can’t quite remember what we were doing that day. However, my best guess would be that our evening involved kittens, cupcakes, and wine. Most of them do.

Beach wear and accessories.

This past week a group of my best friends and I headed out to our favorite beach in Holland. The weather was sticky and hot in the city of Grand Rapids but as soon as we got out on the water, clouds rolled in and the winds picked up. I was looking forward to featuring some of these beach inspired accessories from Poshlocket, so fortunately Mae was able to snap some photos of me before my goosebumps emerged.

This is the first high waisted swimsuit I’ve ever owned, but I was excited to add these bottoms to my summer wardrobe. They were returned to the local Anthropologie (which I recently started working at) and I snatched them up immediately. I love wearing most any swimsuit, but I feel like all the ones I own are very similar when it comes to the way they are cut – so it was nice to try something new for a change. I completed the retro look by adding a hair scarf, which worked well to keep my bangs out of my face, and some sea life accessories that perfectly matched the environment.

Despite the lack of sun, this day was beautiful. I mentioned earlier this week that I was looking forward to more beach days, and I absolutely meant it. Some of my favorite memories take place on Lake Michigan with people I love. Whether we are laughing and playing in the water, or sitting silently reading and listening to music, these are some of the best days of my life, and always have been. The exact locations change, as does the company, but I can’t think of a single day spent on the water that I didn’t revel in.

As time passes, I am becoming more aware of how breath-taking this world is. When I consider waves and woods, skyscrapers and subways, and all the wonderful people that inhabit this planet, I can recognize that there is so much to be appreciative of.

I recently had a moment that made me step back, observe, and truly experience this emotion. About a week ago, I went out to this same beach to meet up with some friends, and on the way I spotted one of the most stunning natural displays I’ve ever witnessed in Michigan. If you are knowledgable about flora and fauna, please head over to my Instagram, scroll down, and tell me what those spectacular, vibrant bushes are in my photo on June 9. I intentionally drove the same route on the day the images in this post were taken so I could share this discovery with my friends. Their reactions did not disappoint. I pulled over to the side of the road, car doors flew open, and they tumbled out – smiles abounding and cameras in hand. We stood there together in wonder and excitement, absorbing this beauty that felt like it had appeared just for us.

Ah, Michigan. Even when you fail to deliver ideal beach weather, you never let me down.
