Holidays at the Heeringa House.

Welcome to the holiday version of our home! This is our second winter season here and I am still coming up with new ideas. I have so many more decorations I’d like to incorporate in the coming years, but this year I decked the halls with items I already owned.

I like to focus my holiday decorations in areas where my guests will see them the most, so I typically choose to put the major of them in the living room. I especially love my mantle and have so much fun making it festive!

Kai and I both grew up in families who loved natural trees, and we were eager to carry on this tradition in our home! Our tree is decorated with white lights, a mixture of matte silver and gold ornaments, glossy gold globes of various sizes, and hand-me-down ornaments that are sentimental to us both. Our tree topper is simply three beaded wire ornaments that spell out our couple’s monogram: K.H.K. If you’ve been following Sidewalk Ready for awhile, you might recognize our tree skirt – it’s our old duvet cover! (You can view my original bedroom decor post here, and updated bedroom decor here.) This has worked well to cover up our ugly tree stand. The only drawback: It’s hard to keep looking nice, especially since Epworth likes to lay under the tree.

This nativity set is sentimental to me because it used to belong to my mom. She gave it to me when she upgraded to the Willow Tree set several years ago, but I don’t know if I’ll ever replace it. It reminds me of when I was younger. My brother and I used to play with the figurines and act out the Christmas story!

Our minimal decorations in the dining room: wooden angels and birch tree candle pillars.

Aside from the physical decorations in our home, another thing that really brings on the holiday cheer is a certain atmosphere  I absolutely love the smell of fresh pine along with a roaring fire. I can’t think of many things that are more calming. Because of this, I was excited to sample the new Crackling Lumiwick Pine Candle from Yankee Candle Co. It creates a crackling sound as it burns and the pine scent is perfect – natural and festive. I placed this one right where I can enjoy it – on the coffee table in our living room, which is where I typically work on my laptop.

Master Bedroom Makeover.

I am making a valiant effort to do more decor posts on Sidewalk Ready! As many of you know, interior design is a hobby of mine and I am always looking for new ideas on how to spruce up our old home. We bought our house specifically because we loved it’s character and potential. It has been such a blast for Kai and I to make it our own!

We recently made some changes to our master bedroom, and I’m so excited to share. I am in love with our new shams and throw courtesy of Pine Cone Hill!

When selecting the bedding that would suit our decor the best, I tried to stick with our current wall color. I don’t mind painting, but after updating our entire house, it was time for a break. The last thing I wanted to do was change the color of this room again!

The main photo in the Nana’s Attic Collection really caught my attention because the headboard in the photo was close to the same color as our walls. I knew this would be perfect for our room! To accent our white duvet, I selected the Hydrangea Sham, two Candlewick Curry Shams, and the Candlewick Curry Throw. I love the way it turned out! You can find links to all of the items here.

I love this view:

Another favorite project that we completed awhile ago: my jewelry display/organizer. I’ve featured this before but thought I’d share it again for any new readers. It is simply reclaimed barnwood that we added rusty nails to, and then hung on the wall. It was really easy and has helped me immensely! It also has accommodated a growing collection as more than one piece can be hung on each nail. The board to the left is a cork board that I stick my earrings in. I keep all my earring backs in the stand on the dresser, along with my pendants and rings.

I’ve recently had the pleasure of sampling some of Yankee Candles’ new products! The candle above is the “Vanilla Shimmer” from the All That Glitters Collection. The other two candles in the line are called “Bubbly Champagne” and “Festive Glow” and are featured below. They are perfect for the holiday season and into the new year. I’ve been burning them constantly and my house smells so good I could eat it. I also feel comfortable proudly displaying them because they are so pretty! When the sad day comes that they are completely gone (which might be awhile considering how little has burned away so far), I am planning on saving the jars for future decor ideas. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving!

Well, that’s it for the bedroom updates! Next project: new floors! We will be switching out this carpet for hardwoods hopefully soon. I can hardly wait! I’ll post some updated pictures then.

Stay tuned because next week I am going to be sharing my holiday decor!

Anniversary bonfire party.

Last night Kai and I hosted an anniversary party at our home. We will have been married for five years this coming Thursday and decided it deserved some celebration! Our backyard is very private and perfect for entertaining. Since we served many s’more options, we finally got some use out of our bonfire pit!

We had some of our best friends over, many of whom don’t know each other, and we were so happy to see how well everyone got along. We love all of our friends and it’s so nice to know that we can get everyone together and have a great time!

I didn’t have a chance to pick up anything new to wear for the party so I decided to wear my Gap Kids lace dress. My wedding dress was ivory lace so I thought this would be perfect to celebrate the anniversary! It was really hot yesterday afternoon but by the time everything started it was the perfect temperature. We were outside until close to 1am and I didn’t even need a sweater!

My mom helped me make the below table cloth awhile back for Katie’s bridal shower. I’m happy it got another use!

We didn’t really get any wide shots of the bonfire area and the drink station but here’s a few details!

The party was B.Y.O.B. but we did bring out the mini fridge from the studio and stocked it with soda and water. On top, I set our ice bucket and old fashion straw holder. The table from our foyer served as a resting spot for the mason jars I like to use as glasses – cheap and durable!

Our bonfire pit is located right off of the patio. We lined that part of the yard with tiki torches full of citronella oil, and then encircled the bonfire with three teak chairs and a barnwood bench.

I lined the path leading to the backyard with large mason jars filled with river rocks and a candle. I did this at our housewarming party as well and re-used the same materials!

Thank you so much to everyone who came and celebrated with us. You all mean so much to both Kai and I and our lives wouldn’t be the same without you!

I would also like to thank Kai for putting up with me when I’ve had one(+) too many drinks. You’re the best husband ever. I’m glad I married you.
